The difference your money makes
To Ruby* a young person who has completed our program the difference is between; just getting by given circumstances of social welfare dependence, a belief that life is a given for what they are delivered and no motivation to go on, to keep living in the world of technology and not real life, to become so isolated that the thought of suicide is frequent COMPARED to an opportunity where life isn’t mapped out by other people than yourself, an opportunity to meet real life mentors who can lead you to learning about real life values and skills, to learn how to work within a team and learn the gratitude of life when you are able to give back through a planned community service program.
$10,000 is what it cost to put one young person through the Kokoda Challenge Youth Program (KCYP). A 14 month (yes 14 months!) experiential program where a young person will train within a group for 20 weeks, within this time they will complete The Kokoda Challenge, be equipped with the right equipment to succeed, have the opportunity to walk the real Kokoda track in PNG and on return partake in a planned community service program for 6 months. And this is just the bones of the program.
“12 months ago I did not have a very bright future, but now I am proud to say my future looks brighter than ever before” Kokoda Kid, 2013.
However…….the money doesn’t only stop at the Kokoda Challenge Youth Program!
With funds raised over the past 9 years the Kokoda Youth Foundation has been able to equip itself with property – Camp Kokoda. With this property the foundation has been able to secure funding through government to support an early intervention youth program called Isurava for youth ages 12 – 14 years old. This work is imperative to the communities that we live; by breaking the cycle of criminal activity, social welfare dependence and addressing youth aged issues in society today. Camp Kokoda is also home to a number of youth based activities from school camps to training weekends.
All money raised allows the Kokoda Youth Foundation to continue working with young Australians expanding the reach and services across Australia.
